Why diamond abrasives are used to restore the appearance of stone surfaces…

Updated: 14/06/2023: Diamonds are very hard (ten on the mohs scale). As a result, this is aiding the grinding (also known as resurfacing) process, to remove damage. Also, etching, scratches or even to round off edges of tiles. From all natural stone and concrete surfaces.

In addition, 60 kg of weight is also required from a planetary piece of equipment. Without this, the process would not resurface the stone. Or even remove the concerns that are on the stone surface. In fact, it is needed for complete restoration, without the need for replacement.

Is resurfacing safe for my stone floors or wall tiles?

Completely! For instance, when grinding a surface, it is just replicating what is done in the manufacturing process when tiles are made. Microns of the stone tile surface are being removed  (dependent on which grit pattern is being used). A 60 grit is more aggressive and typically used to remove scratches or damage. 800 grit being less aggressive, which will leave the surface feeling smoother to the touch. A 1200 grit is a finer scratch pattern being used on the surface. This will not remove deep scratches, but more so used as the final stage in the marble polishing process.

 

Does resurfacing create a dust?

Luckily, it does not. Water is used throughout, whilst grinding a stone or concrete surface. This keeps the dust down and creates a yogurt type consistency. As a result, giving a good indication on how much the stone has been re-surfaced.

This process in itself will remove surface haze and scratches, etch marks and old sealers with mechanical abrasion.

Finally, a wet pic-up vacuum is used to extract the slurry.  After this, a visual inspection needs to be carried out, with a run of the hand over the surface. Ensuring it has been properly resurfaced. Furthermore, with no remaining damage or scratches.
